Tourist carriages and their continued development In the s, new carriages were procured for various West European rail companies so that they could continue to compete with air travel. Its aim was to develop and finance a uniform, comfortable series of carriages. The former West German train operator Deutsche Bundesbahn was supplied with exclusively first-class Avmztype carriages.
These carriages were essentially the same as the previous Avmz-type TEE carriages but with pivot-and-slide doors instead of hinged folding doors. In terms of its carriages, DB was poorly equipped for the launch of the InterCity network in with its Bm carriages, which were about 30 years old.
However, since the cost of a new EUROFIMA compartment carriage seemed excessive to those within the rail company, they developed a carriage themselves which was designed to fit with existing stock. The new carriage provided seating for 80 passengers with a luggage rack at each end. An initial pilot series of the new carriages rolled off the production line in After a few modifications had been made, the new Bpmz range of carriages went into mass production in They were now equipped with M bogies.
From , many of the carriages were altered to provide sufficient space and comfort for people with limited mobility. Larger toilets and wheelchair-accessible areas were introduced, replacing the luggage racks. The second class Bvmz carriages featured a layout which combined open-plan areas and compartments. In technical terms, they were based on the Bpmz. However, since carriages with this set-up could no longer cope with sharply rising passenger numbers, the fittings were altered to resemble the usual interior design of the Bpmz range in The trains and their locomotives were given a colourful blue, yellow, green and white design.
The train interior was designed to allow the possibility for change, which meant that the carriages needed to be completely overhauled. However, the concept was not as successful as hoped and the carriages were stripped down and changed to the standard colour scheme a few years later.
When DB commissioned new lines in , there was a need for pressure-resistant carriages. This gave rise to the new Avmz designations and sub-classes and those of the Bpmz series. The air-conditioning units, WC systems, doors and windows also had to be altered or replaced.
Until this point, the carriages had still been operating with their original internal fittings. They were comprehensively modernised first in the 90s and then at the turn of the millennium. It is likely that the carriages will be gradually decommissioned when the ICx fleet is commissioned in or later. They are currently being modernised both internally and externally at the DB works in Nuremberg to equip them for these long remaining years of service.
