Also one thing alot of new players aren't aware of is the round cement disks,the stone mounds,the shimmry crack in the ground and the brick work patterns on the ground and floors of some battle maps.

Round cement disks increase melee damage I'm guessing two fold. The stone mounds are for ranged types. An archer standing on this can also double his damage and when you think an Archer has high initiative and could get 2 or 3 quick attacks in. Standing on this can cause alot of damage. The crack with the misty glow is for mana users.

Healers and mages can double their heals and attacks. The Brick patterns on the battle map floors indoors and outdoors on some maps increase damage again by quite alot. They can be hard to see at times and never try defending when the enemy is standing in them. Instead draw the enemy out of them.

Counter attacks can be devastating so be aware what enemy troops can counter attack and don't move past them while they defend as they'll get that extra counter attack on you. But then placing your troops in a defensive position side by side where the enemy has to pass can cause some nice counter attacks by your troops. Getting extra hits in is always a bonus.
